STEP 4
IMPORTANCE TO KNOW ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE
As previously stated, climate change can indeed be natural. But unless climate changes naturally, why do we need to be concerned about the current climate change? The early Cretaceous period noted before was warmer than today, but life survived even in locations that are now inhospitable, such as the subsurface of Antarctica.
One common misperception is that concern about climate
change is caused by the Earth's absolute temperature. That is not the case at
all. Scientists are more concerned about the rate of change. Living creatures,
including people, may easily adapt to significant changes in climate if the
changes occur progressively, over several thousands of years or more. But,
adjusting to changes that occur over decades, on the other hand, is
significantly more difficult.
Human involvement with the climate before, if it had
been feasible, would have been far more destructive than the current meddling
with our climate, according to certain measures. However, such influence would
merely raise globally averaged temperatures from those of the last Glacial
Period to those of current periods prior to industrialization. This thought
experiment teaches us that the question isn't whether a given climate is
objectively "ideal." The problem is that human society, natural
habitats, and our surroundings are all extensively adapted to a certain climate
– for our case, the present one. Rapid deviations from that climate change
would most certainly surpass our and other living creatures' adaptation
capabilities, causing considerable disturbance in our environment.
Therefore, hopefully, we've demonstrated that climate change is a topic that we should be concerned about. Perhaps that is something worth looking into. But you can't do anything about an issue you don't grasp the concept, let alone know how to address it.
